Wise Women Wednesday: Danielle Forrest

Danielle Forrest

Q. Who are you? What is your background?
A. I feel most alive when I am spending time with the people I love. I am playful, adventurous, a world traveler, communicator, investor, and entrepreneur. I am passionate about art and culture, a foodie, appreciate the finer things in life (that’s the way my husband nicely says I have expensive tastes), and am a very visual person. I speak with my hands and see the moving parts of businesses in my mind.

I grew up in Michigan and now live in North Carolina. I co-founded an e-commerce company selling eco-friendly home decor when I graduated college. It was fulfilling to offer healthier products for the home and work with artisans around the world. I also felt pride in creating a marketing company that helped owners grow their businesses. One of the perks was that it allowed me to work and travel for a year and half and share my travel adventures through my photography and writing. Now I have taken a leap of faith to move in an unknown direction with my work. I feel a combination of doubt, fear, joy, and excitement about these new changes!

Q. What is your work?
A. I feel like I should have a clear and concise answer for this by now but alias, it’s squishy. When I’m at 30,000ft, I see my work as answering the question of how could this (business, process, or project) be systematized, simplified or leveraged. My work could also be described as project management, marketing, and strategy and planning.

While the who and what of projects often change, the why remains the same. Whether I am helping a coach create a strategy to promote their online course, managing the content strategy of a website redesign project, or brainstorming for a new video series with a client, my intention is to help them grow their business. I love to see them light up with a new idea or excitement for a new project we are talking about.

Q. What is one project you are excited to be working on right now?
A. I am excited to be working with people who inspire me. There are several business owners I have the pleasure of working with and it’s the people who matter to me and the difference I can make in their business.

Q. What is one thing you've done recently that's scared you and took courage, but you're glad you did?
A. I decided to close my most recent business, Joy Works Marketing. It was a painful decision to make and the right one. I am exploring where my work will take me next and learning to enjoy the journey. I feel like any transition in life is difficult in that you are in between and want to find more solid ground. I know that I love the core of my work, it’s more so how it will look moving forward that I am redefining. I’ve been working with more teachers and coaches and that has been very rewarding. I would not have had those opportunities if I had kept my business as it was. I’m also learning that the unknown is what you make it!

Q. What is the work you most want to be doing and are you doing it?  If not why not what's stopping you?
A. I most want to feel engaged and fulfilled by my work and work with people who inspire me. To have a sense of contribution, significance and connection through my work and know that what I am working on is bigger than me. I keep coming back to the idea of having a holding company and investing in different businesses. I find great joy in strategy and planning and would like to have multiple businesses that I manage. One division would be buying online businesses that give back to people or the earth in some way and another is a historical real estate development company.
I already have a name for the real estate business, Storica Investments. While in Europe my imagination was captured by the castles, villas and other historical properties. Some were put to good use and were generating revenue while others were in need of so much care. In a world that is changing so rapidly, Storica Investments would offer an experience that bridges the past and future. While we would be dedicated to honoring these storied properties, I also know that in order to preserve them that we would need to think about their uses in unique and innovative ways. That’s what I am most excited about, is how these properties could be used in unique ways. As well as how the online businesses in the portfolio could better delight customers and be leveraged to give back.
What’s stopping me for doing this is 2 things. 1. I have many ideas of what I could do and become distracted by my options and wanting to know I am choosing the right one. 2. I really enjoy working with established businesses, I don’t like to start them. Ideally I form partnerships or buy a business etc so that I am not starting another one.

Q. What would you tell your high school or college self?
A. Spread warmth and love everywhere you go and live life to the fullest.

Q. What's one piece of advice or motto you love and use in your daily life that you would like to share with my sweet readers?
A. Do nothing and watch everything happen.

Q. What keeps you creating when you don't feel like it?
A. My ego. There is always a part of myself that is competing with myself or others.

Q. What's your favorite yoga pose?
A. Frog. I love that pose because I can sit with what is there with compassion. It hurts so good.

Q. How do you live a life of abundance?
A. I remind myself that there is an infinite abundance of love and light and that there is always more to receive and give.
