Wise Women Wednesday: Amy Jacob

It's Wise Women Wednesday, each week I interview a woman that I believe is inspiring, living abundantly and following her passions.  These are all women who live a life of abundance and bring creativity into the world.

Q. Who are you?
A. I am a dreamer, designer, wife and mother who finds joy in creating.  I'm a rather introverted person - I process things internally - a lot goes on in my mind and I feel things deeply, so my work as an interior designer is a way to outwardly express myself.  It's amazing how you can alter the mood, or feel of the space you live your life in through color, composition, light, and perspective.  The concept of "home" has always been fascinating to me, and I love to design products and spaces that make people feel like they're home.

Q. What is your background?
A. I always wanted to be a designer, but I knew my options were limited, growing up in a little mountain village in New Mexico.  I got a full scholarship to New Mexico State University, where degree options were limiting.  After taking a cultural geography class as an elective, I discovered a love for understanding and connecting with different cultures around the world.  I was fascinated with the idea of how landscapes affect a culture, and how culture affects the land around them.  This created a love for travel.  I married a man from India and I'm blessed to be able to experience authentic culture when we visit his home, and not just see it as a tourist.  Other trips to Europe and South America have also shaped who I am as a designer, because this idea of "home" in each culture gives me depth to the meaning.  I am now a mother to two amazing and beautiful daughters and they have taught me more, shaped me more, and made me grow more than anything else.

Q. What is your work?
A. I'm an interior designer for an online company called Laurel & Wolf.  I love my work because it enables me to work with amazing people all over the country.  I also have my own company called Gathering Wishes Studio where I make products for children's rooms - wall hangings, toys and pillows.

Q. What is one project you are excited to be working on right now?
A. I'm on the design team for a local church - we are renovating a building that is over a hundred years old, exposing it's original features and highlighting its history and natural beauty.  It brings a whole new identity to the word "home" yet again.

Q. What is one thing you've done recently that's scared you and took courage, but you're glad you did?
A. A year and a half ago we sold our house in Phoenix, AZ and moved 2 hours north to a small mountain town called Prescott.  My husband and I both work from home so we had the opportunity to move anywhere.  We wanted our girls to be able to experience seasons, explore nature and have an appreciation of a simpler life.  The move meant uprooting the life we had in Phoenix, but it has been a good change for our family in so many ways.

Q. What is the work you most want to be doing and are you doing it?
A. I feel as if I'm on the right path and I'm open to wherever it leads.  I love that I'm able to help people by bringing beauty, peace, and fulfillment into their everyday lives through design, and that's what I'd love to continue to do.

Q. What would you tell your high school or college self?
A. I used to let fear reign over my heart, so I would tell my younger self, "Keep your eyes on truth.  Stop clinging to the "what-if's" and fear, and pursue truth."

Q. What's one piece of advice or motto you love and use in your daily life that you would like to share with my sweet readers?
A. There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear.  We love because He first loved us.  1 John 4:18-19

Q. What keeps you creating when you don't feel like it?
A. For me it helps to take time to rest, connect with other creative people, listen to inspiring music, and be out in nature.  Have variety in life and let myself be naturally inspired by the world around me.

Q. How do you live a life of abundance?
A. Jesus!  Make it a daily habit to make delicious and healthy food, live in community with others, love well and laugh a lot.
