Resolutions Don't Work; What To Do Instead

Resolutions don't work

Resolutions don't work, and that's the truest thing I can say to you on New Years Eve. 

Please don't get me wrong, I love New Years Eve and the time in January around New Year immensely!  Fresh starts and sparkling possibilities are very exciting to me and I can't resist the allure of making a list of my dreams and goals either.  The biggest lesson I've learned this year is that anything is possible.  I've also learned (and often the hard way) is that if you want to make big lasting life changes in your career, your lifestyle, your health or your business it takes WAAAYY more than commitment, it takes more than willpower. 

Last year at this time my life looked very different and aside from my generally positive and hopeful disposition I was at the end of my rope miserable.  Have you ever felt that way?  Maybe you're feeling that way now?  Let's be honest, it sucks right?!  I was overworking myself, in a career that I hated, craving adventure, feeling like my creativity was going to waste and mostly very lost. The stress levels I was at were also causing me to get sick all the time! It felt like I was living someone else's life but it certainly wasn't the life I was supposed to be living.  

I did make resolutions to redirect the course my life was on.  The thing is that I did a lot of other things besides simply throwing resolutions out into the world.  If you've been following along with me for a while you know that in this last year I quit a job that didn’t serve me, spent the whole year traveling the world and going on big adventures, and am now building a business that I'm head over heels in love with.  I always knew that there were people out there who jumped out of bed so excited to get to work every day they couldn’t stand it but I had no idea that could be me and now it actually is.  Sometimes I still can't believe it.  

Your truest desires are possible too no matter how big and impossible they might seem.  Whatever dream you're currently harboring in your heart is possible, but to make it happen it takes a lot more than setting an arbitrary resolution.  Setting the goal is just the beginning, if you want to flourish on the path to your deepest dreams and desires it means breaking down the goal into small steps.  It means working a little bit towards those steps every day. It means planning for failure (YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT). Failure is a part of the road to success, you’re not going to get it perfect 100% of the time. It means investing in yourself.  It means getting help, and hiring an expert to help you get there to show you things you don’t know yet or hold you accountable to sticking to the path that you’ve decided on. 

Last year at this time when knew I needed to make a change I took the following 5 steps and you can take them too. 
1) Set the goal
2) Made a plan
3) Shared it publicly
4) Invested in myself (hiring life coaches, writing coaches, signed up for certification courses, went on retreats that would expose me to the types of people I wanted to be and to work with)  
5) Did the work and am still doing the work
